Bowen Technique Specialists
Bowen Technique is a soft tissue, remedial therapy named after Tom Bowen. Bowen Technique (or Bowen Therapy) involves the use of fingers or thumbs to move over muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia in the body.
Bowen Technique, which can be conducted on either a couch or a chair, should be both subtle and relaxing and not involve hard or extensive pressure. Most treatment can be performed through clothing although some Practitioners prefer to work directly on skin. Patients should however have the choice as to how the treatment is conducted.
Bowen Technique sessions will usually differ from patient to patient and from session to session based on both the experience of the Practitioner as well as the level of problems experienced by the patient. Bowen therapy will however almost always begin with the Practitioner addressing the whole body before moving on to specific areas.
A key element of Bowen Therapy is that between moves, the Practitioner will leave the room to allow the client to rest; this is a defining aspect of Bowen Technique. Sessions will generally last 45 minutes to an hour but can vary depending on the Practitioner. Initially, Practitioners would recommend three sessions, set five to seven days apart to establish how well the patient responds to the treatment.
Reactions to a Bowen Technique treatment are not uncommon; tiredness, apparent increase in the original symptoms, headaches and stiffness are all possible after-effects. Patients will usually be advised to drink plenty of water and the importance of movement is stressed.
Patients can expect a response to Bowen Therapy within three to four sessions and regular follow-up or maintenance sessions are recommended.
It is strongly recommended by Bowen Technique practitioners that Bowen Therapy is not mixed with other therapies.
